Company who provides support for Biomechanical Lab Setup and Sytem Integration

Hi there,

I am looking for a company who provides support for setting up a bio-mechanical lab, especially for the integration/synchronization of multiple devices (motion capture, force plates, EMG, etc) , support for the hardware/software system setup, and so on.

It would be greatly appreciated if could share any contacts, links, or information pertaining to the same. Thanks much in advance.

Typically the device companies are very good at setup/integration. It does help to have somebody in the lab with technical expertise to facilitate all of the integration though. Where are you located?

Dear Dr. Menoth,

Motion capture systems are generally the managers of other devices, especially to ensure the synchronization of all cameras and analog signals (emg and force plates).
Older systems (5 years ago) generally use an analog/digital converter to connect emg and force plates. Each device has its own documentation for configuring integrator software (mocap) - calibration matrices, reference coordinates voltage limits, and amplification of signals. Unfortunately, I think it will be necessary to consult each support service to perform the integration of the devices - the first company should be the motion capture system - some companies charge a yearly subscription for various scopes of technical support.

Maybe you can make a list of all the devices, models and manufacturers in the laboratory and post this question on the ResearchGate website too: https://www.researchgate.net

Some engineer or researcher near your installation can help in the integration and correct configuration of the systems. Perhaps finding a company that sells and supports all device models used in a motion analysis lab is difficult.

I agree with Wagner - given your location I would recommend that you look at motion capture systems that use an ADC to record analog signals from your various sensors. It's generally easier to verify the overall system performance when you have the ability to confirm the sensor signals with external instruments, i.e. an oscilloscope. Anyone with a decent level of technical training should have very little problem setting up a lab and verifying the performance even if it's their first time at the job.

I agree with Edmund and Wagner as well. If your motion capture system has analog inputs, the vendor should already have synchronized them with the motion capture. Still it's good to verify. We do a test where we throw a marker on the force plate, and you get data like the figure below:

The time of impact can be determined very accurately from mocap data as the intersection of the two lines. In this case, there was a systematic 2.1 ms time lag between motion capture and force plate data, with a variation of only 0.3 ms between trials. Depending on the requirements, you can decide that the time lag is close enough to zero, or time-shift the data before processing.

Some devices are plugged into the analog inputs, but actually have digital electronics internally. For instance, our Delsys Trigno sensors have analog outputs from the base station, but there is a fixed 48 ms delay due to the wireless communication protocol. This is specified in the Delsys documentation and you have to take that into account when processing the data.

p.s. I saw that you had mentioned synchronizing a walkway & IMUs in another thread (https://biomch-l.isbweb.org/threads/...ynchronization). The MotionMonitor integrates a variety of IMU manufacturers & provides the ability to synchronize additional peripheral devices like walkways using an analog pulse. The user can define the voltage and timing of this pulse and use any of the other data sources (raw markers, joint angles, etc) to define the trigger conditions.
