POSITION STATEMENT
The Provision of 3D Printed Orthoses and Prostheses Should be administered by a Certified/Licensed Orthotist/Prosthetist
The Academy has published a position statement on the provision of 3D printed orthoses and prostheses [ https://cdn.ymaws.com/aaop.site-ym.c...D_Printing.pdf ] to clarify the distinction between a manufacturing process and the minimum education essentials & credentialing for providers of custom-fabricated and custom-fit orthoses and prostheses [ https://cdn.ymaws.com/aaop.site-ym.c..._education.pdf ] .
Individually designed orthoses and prostheses are the culmination of provider and patient face-to-face interactions involving assessment, evaluation, goal-setting, design criteria, material and component selection, fabrication, fittings, training, providing proper use instructions, and follow up appointments as necessary. An orthotic/prosthetic patient's maximum rehabilitation potential is reached when appropriately educated and credentialed professionals provide the comprehensive level of care needed.
The intent of the following position statement is to reiterate the importance of established minimum standards adopted and required by numerous state and federal agencies to assure efficacy and safety for patients receiving orthotic and prosthetic services.
