Smart watch for inclinometry

Hi all,

Because I do not own a smart watch, I wondered if current smart watches, like mobile phones, have the sensors and relevant apps to measure angles? If so, is it a generic thing such that most smart watches, regardless of make/models, can do?

Essentially "smart watches" etc all seem to have IMU sensors with the ability to sample movement and angles etc., but they are collecting the data and processing it to generate their app analysis functions, not give people the ability to measure anything. Basically they just try to detect whether the wearer is walking (arm down, swinging forward and backwards) or on an elliptical (arm up and only moving horizontally forwards and slightly back again) to record the users data ... try a Fitbit for example.

But if you want to measure angles then I would look at devices designed to measure angles, not just guess at them - e.g. Biometrics Ltd goniometers etc.

I agree with you in general. However, given such studies (e.g. https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...17300530#f0015), I was merely interested if smartwatches have the capacity to do the same things. If the sensors are present in smartwatches, can apps that work on phones also work on watches? I wondered if people with smartwatches have tried downloading these sort of apps and if they work?
