  • OpenMBD: An Open-Source Multibody Dynamics Simulator for Biomechanics Research and Education

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a project I’ve been developing that may be of interest to those working in impact biomechanics and injury reconstruction.

I’ve built OpenMBD, an open-source multibody dynamics framework designed specifically for biomechanical impact reconstruction. The aim is to provide a transparent, flexible platform for forward dynamics simulations. Ideally, it could evolve into a community-driven counterpart to what OpenSim has become for inverse dynamics and musculoskeletal modelling.

This started as a small side project but has grown into a more complete tool, with:
    • A fully accessible codebase
    • Example models and workflows
    • A supporting paper
    • A step-by-step video tutorial

I’m particularly keen for others to explore, critique, and contribute. If you choose to get involved, whether through feedback, issues, or code contributions, I’ll ensure all contributions are properly acknowledged.

    You can access everything here:
    OpenMBD: https://gtbiomech.github.io/OpenMBD/

I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts, especially around potential applications, limitations, or features that would make this useful for your work.

    Cheers,
    Greg
