  • Postdoctoral Position in Biomechanics - Melbourne, Australia

    Two funded postdoctoral positions are available to commence immediately in the Biomechanics Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Melbourne. The successful candidates will be supervised by Professor Marcus Pandy and will work closely with other postdoctoral fellows and graduate students based in the Biomechanics Laboratory.

    1. Postdoctoral Fellow – Musculoskeletal Modeling of Human Gait

    This position is funded by the Australian Research Council under a Discovery Project grant. The purpose of the project will be to develop patient-specific musculoskeletal models to investigate muscle and joint function during gait. The position is available to local and international candidates and includes funding for 3 years duration. The candidate will be involved in patient data collection, including MRI, motion capture and x-ray fluoroscopy.

    The candidate must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanics, or a related discipline. In addition, the candidate should have:
    (i) Familiarity with finite element software e.g., ABAQUS and ANSYS
    (ii) Experience in rigid-body modeling software, e.g., OpenSim, SD/FAST
    (iii) Skills in programming, including Matlab, C++, and related software
    (iv) Ability to collect and process gait data


    2. Postdoctoral Fellow – Measurement and Modeling of Joint Motion
    The purpose of the project will be to assist in the development and testing of a system designed to measure 3D joint motion in vivo using x-ray fluoroscopy. The position is available to local and international candidates and includes funding for 1 year in the first instance. The candidate will use MRI, CT, and x-ray fluoroscopy to develop patient-specific models of the knee joint.

    The candidate must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanics, or a related discipline. In addition, the candidate should have:
    (i) Knowledge of human musculoskeletal and/or movement biomechanics
    (ii) Knowledge of control engineering principles
    (iii) Skills in programming, including Matlab, C++, and related software


    All applicants are expected to have good communication skills in written and verbal English, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team alongside engineers, physiotherapists and orthopaedic surgeons. Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the applicant.
