    Essential Functions (Job Duties):

    The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position to develop and lead research and teaching programs (undergraduate and graduate) in Biomedical Engineering for as early as Fall 2011. Potential areas of research include, but are not restricted to: Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Instrumentation, Biosensors, Medical Robotics, and Bioimaging. The successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to attract external funding for research and teaching efforts, develop new and teach existing core courses in biomedical engineering and direct graduate students.

    The Department of Biomedical Engineering, which was founded in 2002 following a 65 year history as a Bioengineering Center, is housed jointly in the College of Engineering and the School of Medicine. The BME Department has 10 primary and 16 joint faculty members and a tradition of excellence in research and graduate education. The Department started an undergraduate program in 2010 and anticipates several faculty additions over the next five years. The primary faculty in the Department have annual research expenditures of approximately $5 million. Enrollment consists of 50 Ph.D. students and 150 M.S. students and a plan for 160 B.S. students. Research collaboration opportunities are available in both human and animal studies. Current areas of strength include injury, musculoskeletal and tissue biomechanics, biomedical imaging, cellular and molecular bioengineering, neuro- and cardio- physiology, and computational and systems modeling.     Minimum Qualifications: Applicant must have earned a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, or closely-related engineering program.

    Preferred Qualifications: Post-doctoral or industrial experience of two or more years is preferred for Assistant Professor Level. For senior level candidate, a high research productivity including publications and extramural funding and a dedication to undergraduate and graduate education is required.
