The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a biomechanics engineer with experience in tissue injury mechanics and experimental surrogate systems for computational model validation. Additionally, experience in signal processing, sensor development, and mechanical design of high-rate experimental apparatus is desired. The selected candidate will join APL's Biomedicine Business Area and support a number of innovative research projects. He/she will directly contribute to experimental efforts within the Biomechanics and Injury Mitigation Systems (BIMS) Program. This program develops and uses computational and experimental models of the human body to understand response to blast, ballistic and impact events. Injury prediction and prevention are a focus of these efforts. As part of an interdisciplinary project team, including members within APL, the University, and outside technical partners, the selected candidate will work to address the critical challenges of our sponsors.
The selected Biomechanical Engineer will be responsible for:
1) Development and testing of human surrogate systems.
2) Processing and analysis of sensor data generated from high-rate impact experiments.
3) Sensor system development and evaluation.
4) Support of experiments both on and off-site used for computational model validation.
5) Design and build of high-rate experimental test devices
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* Master's degree in biomechanics, mechanical engineering, or related field.
* Minimum of 3 years experience in biomedical engineering.
* Candidates with demonstrated experience in injury biomechanics research or related field including blast, ballistic or impact conditions are especially desired.
* Knowledge of data acquisition systems, high-rate data collection, signal processing, and sensor systems.
* Willingness to assist with biological tissue testing, which will require the strict observance of biohazard safety procedures. |
* Computer Aided Design.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* US CITIZENSHIP - Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information, which includes US Citizenship.
Desired:
* Candidates who apply should be self-motivated and well-organized individuals interested in working within a dynamic environment on a variety of biomedical research projects. Coursework or relevant experience in finite element analysis, human body dynamics, and blast physics. Familiarity with anthropomorphic test dummies.
