  • Doctoral Student in Biomechanics at Lund University, Sweden

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. student in Biomechanics at the Division for Solid Mechanics, Lund University, Sweden. We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate in a project related to "Functional imaging of bone to improve diagnostics of osteoporosis".

    Type of employment: 4 years, 100 %
    Application deadline: June 15th , 2011.
Startnig date: as soon as possible
    Official Records Number: LTHPA 2011/330

Project: The project aims to improve osteoporosis diagnosis and fracture risk assessment, by integrating functional imaging of bone with mechanical modeling of bone strength and prediction of fracture risk. The approach includes combining DXA imaging, statistical shape modeling, and finite element analysis (FEA). In the first step, a method will be developed to estimate the 3D structure and geometry of the proximal femur based on a 2D image and a shape template. The 2D image of the patient, is then used together with finite element analyses to assess bone strength and fracture risk. An important part of the project is validation by experimental mechanical testing, and by using images from clinical patients with and without history of hip fractures. The project includes both experimental and numerical parts, and is a part of a collaborative project with University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, and Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements: Applications are invited from interested and motivated students from various fields of engineering. Suitable background include biomedical engineering, medical technology, medical physics, mechanical engineering, or other relevant field. Candidates with a recently completed M.Sc. degree, or who are currently finishing their M.Sc. degree, are invited to apply. Interest in Biomechanics, and experience in finite element analysis, matlab or image processing is an advantage.

Basis of Assessment: The successful candidate is selected after considering the candidates ability to complete the education, previous grades and additional qualifications. The ability to express yourselves in speech and writing, and to explain complicated phenomena in a simple way are important from both research and teaching perspective. Especially documented ability to work independently during e.g. M.Sc. thesis is considered highly important. Applicants with their degree imminent is also encouraged to apply for the job. Good knowledge of solid mechanics and physics are also needed.

Applications: Interested candidates are invited to contact Dr Hanna Isaksson (hanna.isaksson@solid.lth.se) and to submit their applications (please include letter of motivation, CV, degree certificate, and name and contact information to at least one referee) online at: http://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/o.o....398217&Type=EU . Please indicate the reference number LTHPA 2011/330 in the application letter.
