Ph.D. Studentship: “Factors compromising the safety of gait in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and the influence of intervention”
Manchester Metropolitan University - Institute for Biomedical Research into Human Movement and Health

Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded Ph.D. studentship at the internationally recognised Institute for Biomedical Research into Human Movement and Health (www.irm.mmu.ac.uk).

This project will investigate various biomechanical aspects of gait in people with diabetes and evaluate how they might influence the safety of daily gait tasks. The project will incorporate an intervention to improve safety through altering various aspects of gait. Resistance exercise training will form a major part of the intervention. Experimental techniques will include kinematic assessment using a motion capture system, measurement of electromyographic activity and the assessment of muscular strength using an isokinetic dynamometer. The project is funded by the European Foundation for the study of Diabetes and will be performed in collaboration with the University of Manchester and the Manchester Diabetes Centre.

Applicants should have a good first degree in biomechanics, the allied health professions, exercise/sport science, biomedical engineering, or in another relevant area. Ideally applicants should also have a Masters degree, other postgraduate qualification, or some research/relevant experience after their undergraduate studies. Direct experience with resistance training, or a good theoretical knowledge of resistance training and its applications is highly desirable. Applicants should have good written and communication skills and be competent working with research participants and patient populations.

The Ph.D. studentship is only available to UK and EU candidates and will be awarded on a competitive basis. It will incorporate full-time tuition fees and a subsistence bursary (£12,000 p.a.) for 36 months. Candidates should submit their application using the Manchester Metropolitan University’s application form to study for a postgraduate research degree, found at:

The reference ‘NR020/EFSD’ should be quoted on the application. Please also include a covering letter outlining your candidacy for this position.

The closing date for applications is 1st August 2011; interviews are expected to be held during August 2011. The anticipated start date is 19th September 2011.

Please contact Dr. Neil Reeves for informal enquiries regarding the Ph.D. studentship (N.Reeves@mmu.ac.uk).
