  • PhD Studentship at Imperial College London in Shoulder Implant Biomechanics

PhD Studentship funded by Department of Bioengineering and JRI
    Full Time; 3 years)

We invite applications for this research collaboration between the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London and JRI, an innovative UK Company that designs and manufactures orthopaedic implants. Applicants should have a first class degree in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, or a related subject to undertake a PhD research programme in the area of anatomical shoulder joint replacements. The PhD will involve interactions with fellow academic engineers, industrial development engineers, and orthopaedic surgeons.

The scope of the PhD is that anatomical shoulder joint replacements suffer from a high failure rate. It is hypothesised that this is partly due to malplacement. During this PhD, rigorous testing of surgical placement technologies will be performed, requiring the development of new testing protocols and algorithms. Possible outcomes may include: novel implantation technology or new implant design.

Because of the breadth of skills required, some of which the applicant will have to develop, the applicant should be dynamic, highly personally motivated and with the ability to study independently.
A stipend and fees for 3 years will be awarded. Students must satisfy the eligibility criteria, including UK or EU residence for three or more years.
