The Ecological Study of Warfighter Load
Department of Kinesiology
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
We are recruiting two postdoctoral researcher associates to work on a Department of Defense (DoD)-funded project investigating the effect of load on Soldier performance. The successful candidates will participate in and help with the development of research determining the consequences of load on perception-action coupling for survivability. Research paradigms include the establishment of upright posture for marksmanship, postural transitions, and visual task performance during locomotion. Effects of load weight and distribution will be examined for their effects on information pick up in the environment and actions specific to the information detected. This research paradigm necessarily involves a multi-disciplinary approach and tools from biomechanics, motor control, and ecological psychology to understand the constraints of load in terms of the relations that provide the basis for successful behavior.
These positions are contingent upon funding.
Applicants should have completed a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field of study (e.g., Kinesiology, Biology, Engineering, and Physics). Desirable qualifications include, but are not limited to, a background in dynamical and ecological perspectives on action and perception, motor control, and ecological psychology.
Applicants should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references to Dr. Richard Van Emmerik (rvanemmerik@kin.umass.edu) by August 15, 2011 for priority consideration. Application materials should preferably be submitted electronically as PDF files, but they can also be mailed to The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Attention: Dr. Richard Van Emmerik, Department of Kinesiology, 110 Totman Building, 30 Eastman Lane, Amherst, MA 01003-9258. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Richard Van Emmerik via email for more information about the position.
Women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply. The University of Massachusetts is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer. The Department of Kinesiology is committed to increasing the diversity of the faculty, student body, and curriculum.
