    Job Description
Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF, was established as a public university in 1990. Committed from its beginnings to the pursuit of excellence, it holds 22 undergraduate programs, 91 master courses and 9 doctoral degrees in the fields of Biomedical Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities and Communication and Information Technologies. UPF serves nowadays over 11500 students, around 25% coming from abroad, with around 1300 academic staff and 630 administrative support personnel. UPF is currently at the forefront of research as an internationally recognized contributor to state-of-the art in several of its areas with research activities dynamically feeding its academic degrees. This strong focus on excellence has led UPF to consistently rank among top five Spanish Universities in terms of both scientific productivity and academic efficiency.

The Department of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC, was recently ranked among the top 100 Computer Science departments in the world (ARWU). The Department is offering Biomedical Engineering as a new undergraduate degree starting from 2011. This program is supported by strong collaborations with many Universities, and Institutes, including Academic Hospitals, both nationally and internationally. Research areas of the Department include Biomedical Imaging & Modeling, Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience, Cognitive Modeling, Language Processing. DTIC will also be offering Master programs in Biomedical Engineering (of which the Master of Research in Biomedical Imaging and Modeling is about to start) and aims to grow to a leading Research Institute on Biomedical Applications.

DTIC at UPF seeks to appoint a Professor/Associate Professor (fulltime, tenured) in the field of Biomedical Engineering. Some areas of interest are Biomechanics, Biomechatronics, Medical Imaging, Systems Physiology, Cognitive Sciences, Bionanotechnology, Neural Engineering, Simulation and Modeling but exceptional candidates with expertise in other related areas of Biomedical Engineering would also be considered.

The appointment would be made to a level commensurate with qualifications and experience, but the intention is to recruit at the highest academic level within the Spanish Academic System, which would be equivalent to an international full-professor and/or chair.

The successful candidate will be an internationally recognised academic with a long-term research track record in any of the above-mentioned areas. A strong commitment to clinical translational research and to reinforce our ties with our network of academic hospitals would be desirable. The candidate’s experience and abilities should strengthen and expand the current research program.
The candidate will be involved in and will help further developing the undergraduate and postgraduate initiatives in Biomedical Engineering. Demonstrated capacity for teaching in several subjects of the Department’s undergraduate programs (in English) is essential.

The candidate must have an international profile of excellence as a researcher. She/he must have published pioneering contributions in major research journals and top conference proceedings. The candidate must hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline (Biomedical/Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, etc.) and besides evidence of excellence in teaching, she/he must display a capacity to lead the teaching and learning philosophy of the Program providing direction and leadership. The candidate should also fulfill the following requirements:

    • The candidate should be an enthusiastic team player with the ambition to strengthen, expand and focus the current research program. Experience in initiating and participating in collaborative projects with scientific and industrial partners and (international) research programs is advantageous.
    • The candidate should have proven record of attracting substantial research funding.
    • The candidate should have demonstrated interest for clinical translation of her/his research and interaction with clinical partners.
    • The candidate should have solid leadership capabilities.
    • She/he should have an excellent command of the English language.
