Job Description:
The Assistive Technology Research Division of Whirlwind Wheelchair International has several openings for experienced researchers in the field of assistive technology with a focus on wheelchairs or prosthetic technology. The positions are grant funded, temporary positions with flexible hours and an immediate start date. All positions are ~2-3 months in duration, but the average weekly effort is 80% - 100% FTE dependent upon the position.
Under the grant, Technology Access in Resource-Limited Environments, Whirlwind ATR is conducting a comprehensive study of how assistive technology (AT) devices and services for hearing, vision, speech, and mobility-impaired persons, are provided in resource-limited environments (RLEs) in Vietnam, Cambodia, Tanzania, Malawi, Colombia, and the Navajo Nation in the United States.
The successful applicant will work with the research team to conduct a comprehensive, systematic scoping review on the state of AT provision in RLEs and participate in the analysis of data to determine what factors affect the provision of high quality, appropriate AT. Research associates will work within their areas of expertise to independently review and code publications, and then reconcile their responses with the lead researcher for the corresponding AT category. Collaboration on publications is encouraged, but not a requirement of the position. This is an excellent opportunity for the selected applicants to gain experience in conducting systematic reviews, expand their knowledge of their profession in resource-limited environments, and collaborate on manuscripts.
About Whirlwind:
Whirlwind Wheelchair International, based at San Francisco State University, has been designing wheelchairs for more than 30 years that are built and used in developing countries in order to promote independent mobility, social integration, and sustainable economic development. With this grant from the US Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), Whirlwind is now expanding its efforts to include other types of AT.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a M.S. or Ph.D. in rehabilitation engineering/science or related field with demonstrated AT experience. The ideal candidate will have research experience with the design, development, testing (laboratory and field), or provision of wheelchairs or prosthetic devices. Preference will be given to individuals who have experience with AT that is appropriate for use in developing countries or resource-limited environments. Candidates should have the ability to work independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary, and demonstrated excellence in presentation and publication of scientific results are especially sought. A computer with high-speed internet access is required.
