  • Faculty Position (Full Professor) in Biomedical Engineering

The Medical Faculty of the University of Bern invites applications for a faculty position at the full professor level in the field of Image Guided Therapy. The position will be established at the Artificial Organ (ARTORG) Center for Biomedical Engineering Research. The professorship is further embedded in the Center for Computer Aided Surgery (CCAS), which is a joint technological and clinical research effort within the Medical Faculty.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research program. The focus should be on the development, integration, and validation of enabling technologies towards advanced computer aided and image guided systems for medical interventions that support the complete treatment process from therapeutic planning and simulation via intraoperative action to postoperative care, monitoring, and documentation. Candidates should have a proven track record in one or more of the following or related fields: surgical navigation and robotics, mechatronic device technology, computer vision and medical image analysis. Broad expertise in their use for non-musculoskeletal interventions is favored.
Additional prerequisites are a strong motivation and an undisputable commitment to undergraduate and graduate student education. The professorship will be embedded in the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Bern and the specialized Master’s program in Biomedical Engineering. Furthermore, teaching activities that are clearly aimed at bridging the fields of engineering and clinical science are expected.
The successful candidate will head one of the focus areas within the ARTORG Center and is expected to share the directorship of the Center in rotation. Collaborations with other groups within the University of Bern as well as with other academic institutions, nationally and internationally are demanded. In particular he/she is expected to build up a strong program aiming at intensive interaction and cooperation with the interventional and surgical departments of the university hospital. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong track record of competitive third party funding, ideally also at the international network level, and have prior experience with professional leadership, budgeting and administration of at least a medium-sized research group. In order to assure the socio-economic impact of his/her research program, the candidate should demonstrate capacity in technology transfer and eventually entrepreneurship.
With a view towards increasing the proportion of female professors, the University of Bern specifically encourages female candidates to apply.
