  • PhD Opportunity in Clinical Gait Analysis with Prof Richard Baker

IMPROVING THE EVIDENCE BASE OF CLINICAL GAIT ANALYSIS

This is an opportunity for someone with an existing interest in clinical gait analysis to study for a PhD. The title is deliberately broad to encourage projects reflecting the specific interest of the applicant. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Baker (r.j.baker@salford.ac.uk ) to discuss potential projects at an early stage to enable a joint specification of the project. Examples of the sorts of projects that would be encouraged would be:

THE RELATIONSHIP OF EMG TO KINETICS. Even in people without pathology there is poor agreement between when muscle activity is recorded using EMG and when it is predicted to be required on the basis of inverse dynamics. This PhD will use experimental and theoretical approaches to try and document and account for these differences.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL EXAMINATION AND GAIT DATA. Several conventional clinical tests have been modified by gait analysts to correlate more strongly with joint kinematics (e.g. modifying the Thomas test so that the pelvis is held with the ASIS vertically over the PSIS). This PhD will develop a systematic approach to performing a clinical examination to augment gait analysis findings and develop repeatability measures and normative ranges for such tests.

Applicants should have some previous experience of gait analysis preferably in a clinical context. They should have a good first degree (at least an upper second honours degree or equivalent) in a subject relevant to clinical gait analysis (e.g. physiotherapy, prosthetics and orthotics, physics or mechanical engineering). A relevant masters degree would be a distinct advantage.

Our overall aim is to encourage individuals who come from different professional/academic backgrounds to expand their skill base to become clinical gait analysts competent to take responsibility for all aspects of the clinical gait analysis process. We would be particularly keen to support applicants who see studying for a PhD as part of this personal development.

This scholarship is offered through a Graduate Teaching Assistantship which offers a valuable opportunity to study for a PhD while teaching in subjects broadly related to your PhD research. Previous Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) report their teaching assistantship has provided advantages in a range of professional, industrial, research and academic careers. The Graduate Teaching Assistantship covers full tuition fees and the scholarship for three years, based on successful PhD progression. The scholarships are worth £13,590 per year (2011-2012 levels) and are available to Home/European Union students.

Further details of the opportunity and instructions on how to apply can be found at http://www.salford.ac.uk/study/postg...nd-funding/gta. The closing date is 17th February 2012.
