Through the systematic application of ergonomic principles to product research, development, test and evaluation, the Human Factors (HF) Team at NSRDEC ensures that military-oriented products (such as personal protective clothing and individual equipment, airdrop, shelters and tent systems, food service equipment and other organizational equipment intended for Soldier use) are compatible with the intended users and the users’ physical environment; maintain users’ health and safety; enhance users’ functional effectiveness and optimize the user interface.

The US Army Natick Soldier RD&E Center’s Human Factors Team has an opportunity available for an ORISE participant to partake in the following Human Factors Engineering project experience: the degree of complexity and independence associated with the assigned tasks/projects will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and knowledge.


This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:



Assist in planning all phases of Human Systems Integration/Human Factors (HSI/HF) product evaluations or studies, to include the following specific activities:


· Review product requirements and determine the HSI/HF attributes that require assessment

· Develop detailed test plans or test strategies that will fully address the HSI/HF attributes

· Develop data collection tools to capture subjective data (rating scales, yes/no or open-ended responses) and objective, measurable data (timed data, accuracy), such as questionnaires, data log sheets, focus group discussion topics, etc. to be used in the evaluations.

· Prepare for laboratory and field evaluation – this may include laboratory and equipment set-up, development and collating all test data sheets.


· Conduct anthropometric body measurements of clothed test participants (training will be provided).

· Conduct laboratory and/or field evaluations, utilizing active duty military personnel as test participants. Evaluation techniques may include utilizing standardized tests and/or development of mission-specific tasks/activities that allows for the collection of required data. Areas of evaluation may include: dexterity/tactility, vision, hearing/communication, body range of motion (utilizing goniometry and/or other motion capture techniques), equipment compatibility and interaction, work flow analysis, control layout, etc. (Note: field evaluations will include travel to test sites, typically located throughout the continental United States).


· Conduct focus group discussions with test participants


· Data entry and analysis using advanced statistical techniques to analyze data (SPSS or excel) and development of data tables that presents data results in understandable format.


· Preparation of comprehensive report of results that outlines the methods used, data results, conclusions, interpretations and recommendations.


This position requires high-quality interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, as well as the enthusiastic ability to interact professionally and participate as a team member. Candidates with the appropriate education or skills and who are eager to learn and/or implement the unique HSI/HF techniques associated with the RDT&E of military products intended to optimize user-system effectiveness, safety and interaction are encouraged to apply.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS



Applicants who have recieved a bachelor's degree or who is a current master's degree student in Human Factors Engineering or Engineering Psychology related to product Research, Development, Test and Evaluation, within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.



The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at Natick, MA. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to a total of three years based upon recommendation of NSRDEC and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is at Natick, MA. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants. The appointment is full time at the host installation.
