Post-doc opportunity in orthopedic biomechanics and computational modeling

The position is located in the Functional Performance and Device Use Laboratory within the
Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health at the Food and Drug Administration in Silver Spring, MD. OSEL conducts laboratory and field research on medical devices to support the scientific basis for the agency’s regulatory decision-making. The candidate would join a collaborative team on a project using experimental data and computational modeling to understand the mechanical factors that contribute to early failure of metal-on-metal hip joint implants. The position is for one year but could be extended to a second year if funding becomes available.
Candidates should have received a doctoral level degree in Biomechanics, Engineering, or related discipline within the last 5 years and be U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.
The strongest candidates will have demonstrated experience in the following areas:- Developing and implementing finite element models using experimental data, including meshing, boundary conditions, and parameter optimization.
- Strong skills in ANSYS.
- Experience with wear simulators, mechanical load frames, and other relevant bench-top methods.
- Programming expertise in LabVIEW – especially focused on integrating multiple network and communication protocols (TCP, Bluetooth) for data acquisition. Some digital signal processing recommended.
- Programming expertise in Matlab – especially image and signal processing. Exposure to C3D toolbox a plus.
- Experience with forward dynamics problems, inverse dynamics problems, and optimization of simulations with large numbers of degrees of freedom.
- Record of publication in peer reviewed journals and presentation at society meetings.
