    REHABILITATION RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

    Polytrauma and Traumatic Brain Injury Research at the DC VA Medical Center and NRH


    Track 1: Physical Therapy (DPT or PT license combined with a doctoral degree required)
    Track 2: Bioengineering (PhD or other doctoral degree required)



    Description: The interdisciplinary Polytrauma and Traumatic Brain Injury
    Rehabilitation Research (PT/TBI) Fellowship is intended to develop clinicians
    and scientists with the vision, knowledge, and commitment to lead polytrauma and
    TBI research efforts that address the critical needs of the VHA and the Veterans
    that it serves.

    Rehabilitation specialists with a clinical or research doctoral degree will be provided
    2 years of in-depth training in clinical research for polytrauma, TBI, and related
    disorders. The current position will feature neurophysiological research involving
    the assessment of inter-hemispheric inhibition and upper extremity motor control
    .

    The PT/TBI Fellowship will be based at the Washington DC VA Medical Center (DC
    VAMC) and the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in partnership with Georgetown
    University, MedStar Health, and the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for
    Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS).

    Salary, benefits, and research stipend will be provided. Applications will be accepted and
    reviewed on a rolling basis; however, one position is currently open with a targeted Fall
    appointment.

    Training Highlights: Didactic training will be supported by the DC VAMC, the
    Georgetown Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience, and the GHUCCTS. The
    learning program will be individualized based on the academic preparation and
    interests of the fellow. Training topics may include: neuroscience, CVA and
    TBI etiology, brain imaging, experimental design, data analysis, grant and
    manuscript writing, and career development.

    Requirements: Successful candidates will have a clinical and/or research
    doctoral degree and be U.S. residents. Track 1 applicants must have a current
    U.S. physical therapy license.

      Post-doctoral skill development in TMS and other neurophysiologic assessment techniques:

      Join a motivated, collegial, interdisciplinary team in a series of studies involving inter-hemispheric inhibition and upper extremity motor control.


      Other benefits to this post-doctoral training opportunity includes didactic training in neuroscience, specific training in grant writing, and assistance with a follow-up funding submission via a mentored-training grant award at the end of Year 1.

      All fellowship recipients also receive their own supplemental grant funds in addition to general funding from the VA and the sponsoring laboratory.
