Brain connectivity during movement planning and execution in young and older adults

The research undertaken within this PhD project is part of a recently funded Australian Research Council project (awarded to Dr Mark Hinder) and will improve our knowledge of the brain mechanisms associated with motor control across the lifespan. It is known that advancing age is associated with a decline in the ability to make accurate movements which can have profound consequences on older adults’ ability to live independently, and likely contribute to the fact that over a third of those older adults living at home experience at least one fall annually.

The scholarship holder will use transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate the neural correlates of movement preparation and execution in young and older adults. The project will involve testing functional interactions between different brain regions, for example premotor and primary motor cortices, in a variety of motor tasks, and test the hypothesis that older adults rely more on cognitive control of movement than younger adults.

Applicants should have completed an honours degree in a science, engineering or psychology discipline (1st class or upper 2nd class would be desirable). They should have demonstrated strong research and analytical skills and have an interest in neuroscience, human movement/biomechanics and/or cognitive psychology. Furthermore, good computing skills would be an asset, together with scientific report writing skills. The recipient will work closely with Dr Hinder, as well as Prof Jeff Summers and Dr Mike Garry within the School of Psychology, Sandy Bay Campus, Hobart. The scholarship is offered for three years, with possible 6 month extension in approved circumstances.

Start date: from 30th March 2012
Closing date for applications: applications remain open until scholarship is filled.
