    Lead Researcher Experimental Biomechanics -- The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU APL)

    The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a Lead Researcher in Experimental Biomechanics with demonstrated expertise in tissue response characterization and/or injury risk assessments. Responsibilities include the design, execution, and analysis of biological specimen testing, and leadership of a high-performing team of engineers. Candidate will be responsible for setting direction and coordinating experimental biomechanics efforts for an interdisciplinary project team, including members within JHU APL, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes, and outside technical partners, for the purpose of increasing understanding of injury mechanisms and developing improved mitigation systems.

    The selected Lead Researcher, Experimental Biomechanics will:
    * Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of innovative and skilled engineers in the design and execution of both high-rate biological specimen experiments and evaluation of novel human surrogate systems that exceed the measurement capabilities of current anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs).
    * Develop defensible, novel test methods for conducting experiments to determine tissue response and injury mechanisms related to blast and ballistic impact events. Critically analyze, interpret, and apply results to validate human surrogates and computational models.
    * Assist in the conceptualization of new project areas and proposal development. Promote collaborative exchange of ideas between team members to aid the establishment of new tasking to meet sponsor objectives.
    * Lead reporting and communication of results to program management, sponsors, and the scientific community through peer-reviewed journal publications and technical meetings.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required:
    * BS/MS in mechanics, mechanical engineering, or a related field and 7 years of related professional work experience.
    * Demonstrated senior professional leadership experience in mechanics, mechanical engineering, or related field with a focus on biomechanics involving tissue response characterization and/or injury risk analysis.
    * Proven record of successfully leading an engineering team in conducting research efforts focused on dynamic biomechanical testing of biological tissue for validation of computational models, the development of anthropomorphic test devices, or the establishment of injury risk curves.
    * Demonstrated knowledge of high-rate mechanics, data acquisition systems, and data processing and analysis techniques.
    * Proficient in design of experiments and statistical analysis.
    * Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    * Demonstrated initiative, motivation, flexibility and interest in working in a team environment.
    * Excited by the prospect of a dynamic work environment with the ability to prioritize concurrent tasks.

    Desired:
    * PhD in mechanics, mechanical engineering, or related field with a focus on human injury biomechanics.
    * Experience in end-to-end experimentation and validation studies including CAD modeling, medical image acquisition (e.g. CT, MRI), image segmentation, and image processing.
    * Experience with high rate loading equipment including Split-Hopkinson (Kolsky) Bar, Servo-hydraulic test frames, Shock-tube, live-fire experimentation.

    SPECIAL WORK CONDITIONS:

    Candidate will be expected to lead biological tissue testing using high-rate experimental equipment, which will require the strict observance of biohazard and safety procedures.

    SECURITY:

    Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for a NAC/LAC and access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US CITIZENSHIP.
