PhD Title: Understanding and Improving Adherence in Falls Prevention Programs

A full time 3 year PhD scholarship, equivalent to the Australian Postgraduate Award (currently $23,728 per annum tax free) is offered for the above project.

The Falls and Balance Research group is currently conducting several NHMRC-funded trials in which older people are randomised to either receive a falls prevention program or to a usual care control group. Falls are monitored for 12 (to 24) months. As part of this doctorate, additional interviews will be conducted with study participants to establish their attitudes to the intervention, and the presence of possible barriers and enablers to the intervention. Participants will also complete monthly adherence calendars. Regression analyses will be conducted to determine the predictors or combinations of predictors best able to explain participant adherence to the prescribed intervention program.

This PhD program will be based within Neuroscience Research Australia and the University of New South Wales. The program will suit an individual with quantitative skills and interest in a career in applied health services research. University Fees would be paid for a suitably qualified overseas candidate.

Essential criteria: an undergraduate degree with Honours in a relevant health or social science discipline; eligibility for enrolment in a PhD program at the University of New South Wales.

Desirable criteria: a Master’s degree; current Australian drivers licence.

Health professionals, particularly those with a psychology background, are welcome to apply.
