  • PhD Studentship at the university of Southampton - Bone Structure

Phd Title: Examining blood vessel structures in bone during development, adulthood and disease using high resolution µCT

Vascular interactions with bone and delivery of osteogenic precursors is crucial for endochondral bone remodelling during both bone formation and in healing of fractures (. Further, reduced bone vasculature is associated with diseases such as osteoporosis. Lack of high quality imaging of adult bone has hampered investigations of bone microcirculation to date, however recent third generation synchrotron sources now allow CT at the micrometer range allowing the study of bone lacunae and vessels.

This interdisciplinary collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering (Philipp Thurner) and the Centre for Biological Sciences (Claire Clarkin) will use state-of-the-art technology at μVIS, University of Southampton (www.southampton.ac.uk/muvis/) to optimise and analyse the changes in the cortical canal structures during bone development, adulthood and disease.

This studentship is open to EU and UK nationals only.

Annual tax free stipend £13,350 per annum.

For informal enquiries related to this project contact Dr Claire Clarkin (C.E.Clarkin@soton.ac.uk) or Dr Philipp Thurner (P.Thurner@soton.ac.uk).
