PhD in Musculoskeletal Measurement & Modelling
Manchester Metropolitan University Faculty of Science & Engineering

Research Project Description - Ageing is associated with weakness, loss of muscle mass and changes in the mechanical properties of skeletal muscle and tendon that lead to an overall decline in physical function. However, we understand very little of how these individual components and their properties impact upon the potential for muscle force production and therefore affect the overall decline in physical function with ageing. This project aims to use a dual approach of mathematical modelling and experimental measurement to understand the relative importance of each system component in the musculoskeletal system for force production and system dynamics.

Our Offer A scholarship to study for a PhD which covers tuition fees and provides a stipend of 12,000 per annum tax free for a 3 year period. The studentship will be awarded on a competitive basis and will only be open to candidates from the UK/EU due to funding restrictions. The successful candidate will work on this multi-disciplinary project in collaboration with a world leading biomechanics research group, the Institute for Biomedical Research into Human Movement & Health ( and also collaborate with the School of Engineering and the School of Computing. Additionally, Manchester Metropolitan University provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development.
