  • Ph.D. Position at University of Bern

More than half a billion people worldwide suffer from cancer and circulatory diseases, of which cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer in high-income countries (www.who.int). Accordingly, enormous efforts and investments worldwide in the development of new drugs for cardiovascular and cancer patients are made.
Hence, the field of angiogenesis research and tissue engineering are extremely rapidly growing research areas. The number of research groups and institutions in this area is constantly growing and supported by pharmaceutical and medical industries because of the enormous potential for anti-and pro-angiogenic drugs.

The latest developments in micro-computed tomography now allow images with a resolution down to sub-micro level, which combined with effective contrast agents opens new horizons in biomedical research and diagnostics. However, the complexity of the imaged data is high and requires advanced algorithms in order to cope with the inherent complexity of microvessels and the large amount of data collected by micro-CT imaging devices.
Applicants are invited for a Ph.D. studentship at the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics, University of Bern. We aim to characterize and quantify the microstructure of heart muscle tissues from micro-CT images in order to better understand the complex processes of early tissue development and disease progression. Your project will focus on investigating, developing, and evaluating semi-automatic and automatic novel approaches to segment and characterize tree-like micro-vessel structures from micro-CT images. In collaboration with the department of anatomy, Univ. of Bern, your job will also include, sample preparation, image data acquisition using state of the art micro CT devices, and optimization of the imaging protocol.
The position is available from October 2012. Candidates with an MSc or equivalent in Computer Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field should apply. Experience with any of the following would be a distinct advantage: microCT image segmentation, Insight Toolkit (ITK), C++. Funding is available for three years.
Interested candidates should (only) apply online at:** http://www.tinyurl.com/positionMIA
