Applications are now being accepted for 1-2 postgraduate research participation program appointments with the Biomechanics Team at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC), located in Natick, MA.
The appointment includes, but is not limited to: participating in advancement of Biomechanics and related human performance sciences research as related to agility and mobility measures; Engaging in continued research knowledge and skill development while receiving mentorship in order to successfully participate on full range of the research to solve difficult problems related to soldier load carriage and personal protective equipment; participating in the execution, collection, processing, and analysis of applied biomechanics research, while utilizing force plates, treadmills, surface electromyography, motion capture equipment, stationary and mobile metabolic measurement systems and related analysis and statistical software; and collaborating with and traveling to other DoD organizations for field data collection efforts. Under this program, the participant will be exposed to a range of research opportunities such as the identification of biomechanical measures related to physical fatigue, agility, postural control, gait, or other movement paradigms which in turn facilitate the evaluation of materiel end items that the Soldier wears/uses. Experience in participating in human subjects research is essential and participant candidates must have excellent self-motivation skills.
NSRDEC has the dedicated mission to maximize the Warrior’s survivability, sustainability, mobility, combat effectiveness and quality of life by treating the Soldier as a System. In this program, participant will take part in an enthusiastic and mission-driven environment to include multiple doctorally qualified, credentialed investigators and a dedicated research team. Team personnel have backgrounds in anthropology, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, ergonomics, exercise science, and kinesiology. The participant may also have opportunities to engage in collaborative multidisciplinary research at Natick with colleagues in cognitive science, physiology, engineering, anthropometry, human factors, and other areas.
The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed yearly based upon recommendation of NSRDEC and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is full time at Natick, MA and will be run thru the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education / Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have received a masters degree in Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or closely related Human Movement Science area within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran. The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at Natick, MA.
