    The Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) is the laboratory of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the Food and Drug Administration. OSEL performs product testing; develops reliable standardized test methods for CDRH and industry use; performs anticipatory scientific investigations on emerging technologies; contributes laboratory data to national and international standards used in CDRH decision making; provides scientific and technical training for CDRH staff members; and maintains laboratory collaborations and relationships with scientific researchers in academia and other Federal laboratories. OSEL also coordinates and oversees CDRH’s activities that support the development of national and international standards.

    POSITION INFORMATION: This appointment is offered through the CDRH Postgraduate Research Participation Program and is administered by the Oak Ridge Institue for Science and Education (ORISE). The program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S citizens without regard to race, color, age religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disabilitiy, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran. The individual selected for appointments will not become employees of ORISE, ORAU, DOE, FDA, CDRH, or any other office or agency. Program participants will be paid a monthly stipend. This position is located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

    The overall goal of the project is to apply Ion Torrent sequencing technology to rapidly identify biothreat agents in a BSL-2 environment. The project will involve plasmid construction and Ion Torrent sequencing Data will be analyzed using both web-based and proprietary bio-informatic software, the appointment will be renewable up to 3 years.

    Qualifications: This is an educational program and candidates should be within 5 years after graduation. The position requires previous experience, training and publications using next generation sequencing. The successful applicant will be generating and characterizing plasmids for biothreat agents. These plasmids reagents, in conjunction with biological samples, will be used evaluate the performance characteristics and applicability to identifying bio-threat agents in a BSL-2 environment. Sequence identification requires facility with bio-informatic software packages. The candidate should have a doctoral degree.     SALARY RANGE: $62, 467 - $ 89, 033 salary is commensurate with experience.
