  • Doctoral Research Assistant Position in Hand Rehabilitation

The Hand Rehabilitation Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is seeking a motivated graduate student to pursue a doctorate degree in the field of biomechanics, neurophysiology, and neurorehabilitation. The lab currently has a director, three postdoctoral fellows, two Ph.D. students, one M.S. student, nine undergraduate research assistants, and two affiliated clinicians. The lab’s main research interests are: (1) understanding neurophysiologic and biomechanical mechanisms for poor hand function following aging or neurologic disorders such as stroke; and (2) developing assistive devices and rehabilitative interventions to improve the quality of life for persons with sensorimotor impairment. Our research projects spans from basic neuromechanics studies to applied studies such as optimization of assistive glove designs, development of rehabilitation training protocols, ergonomic designs of daily objects, and driving simulation to increase driving safety for people with hemiparesis. We work collaboratively with investigators in diverse backgrounds including engineers, kinesiologists, neuroscientists, therapists, and physicians.

Ideal applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. in mechanical/biomedical/industrial engineering, kinesiology, neuroscience, or related disciplines. Research experience with force transducers, motion analysis, EMG, musculoskeletal modeling, electrical or magnetic stimulation techniques, fMRI, statistical analysis software, programming (MATLAB, LabVIEW), and human subject testing are desirable.
