The McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking an individual to fill a full time "Reserach Specialist B/C" position. This laboratory has recently completed a major renovation including design of new laboratory facilities on campus, purchase of new equipment, and the addition of new faculty, staff, and students. Collaborators include basic science and clinical faculty, research staff, students, residents, and fellows. The laboratory has the capability for mechanical testing at large and small scales, fabricating unique devices and components, and processing images and computational output. Additional contiguous and collaborative orthopaedic research laboratory activities are devoted to biologic, biochemical, tissue and cell culture, and histologic studies of musculoskeletal tissues.

The Research Specialist C will be expected to carry out higher level responsibilities. These responsibilities include:
The ideal candidate has the minimum of a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering, and 1-3 years of work experience (3 to 5 years for a Research Specialist C) or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in biomedical engineering or related field is a plus. Experience in soft tissues, tissue engineering, and/or upper extremity mechanics, as well as mechanical testing, device fabrication, computer skills, and basic statistics are all desirable but not required. Salary is competitive and based on experience with an excellent fringe benefit package. The position will be filled as soon as the appropriate individual is identified. Responsibilities for the "Research Specialist B" position include:
- Biomechanics research literature search, manuscript preparation and group reports.
- Protocol development mechanical testing loading profile.
- Conducting experiments primarily mechanical testing of tissues (including tissue harvest and preparation, as well as animal handling when appropriate).
- Experimental apparatus design and fabricate new testing fixtures or equipment in on-site machine shop.
- Maintain and troubleshoot lab equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
The Research Specialist C will be expected to carry out higher level responsibilities. These responsibilities include:
- Independently performing histology, including dissection, embedding, sectioning and staining.
- Independently performing data analysis of mechanical data (calculating optical strain, stresses, stiffness/modulus, etc.).
