  • Mid-Career Biomechanist: Injury Recovery & Prevention

    OPEN POSITION:
    The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is pleased to announce an opening for a mid-career or senior level Biomechanist to join its Engineering and Control Technology Branch (ECTB), in the Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD), Morgantown, WV, USA. This is a three-year Service Fellowship with the potential for renewal, in collaboration with Frank L. Buczek, Jr., Ph.D. The ECTB currently includes sixteen scientists in four research teams, developing objective measures of biomechanical, biodynamic, neurophysiological, and behavioral stressors in the workplace. This vacancy focuses on the work of the Biomechanics Team by enhancing upper-extremity and full-body laboratory models to improve injury prevention and recovery programs.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    This member of the Biomechanics Team will: (1) provide leadership for research efforts that emphasize high fidelity upper extremity modeling for injury prevention, and clinical gait analysis for improved recovery, (2) conceptualize hypothesis driven research studies, (3) supervise junior staff in equipment maintenance and calibration, biomechanical data collection, reduction and interpretation, and software development, (4) initiate and contribute to peer-reviewed abstracts and manuscripts, (5) act as a mentor for junior staff, and biomechanics liaison for the Branch.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    The successful candidate will have a Doctoral degree in Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Biomechanical Engineering, or a related field, and an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or complementary discipline. Five or more years of experience is needed in biomechanical analysis of human movement (lower and upper extremities, full-body, etc.), and three-dimensional, six degree-of-freedom kinematic and kinetic analyses in clinical, sport, or occupational settings. Familiarity with Vicon Nexus systems and Visual3D biomechanical modeling software will be particularly helpful.

    FACILITIES:
    The newly renovated Biomechanics Laboratory occupies over 1600 square feet (23 x 73 ft), and is equipped with a 14 camera Vicon Nexus system, three moveable AMTI force plates, three stationary Bertec force plates, Motion Lab Systems electromyography, Visual3D, MATLAB, a dedicated computer network, etc. The NIOSH research campus in Morgantown is adjacent to West Virginia University where adjunct appointments may be available in engineering, orthopedic, and allied health departments; metropolitan areas in Pittsburgh and Washington DC are within a one and three hour drive, respectively. Lakes, streams, and rolling hills add to the natural beauty of the area.
