Experimental Biomechanics and Injury Science Postdoctoral Fellow (02895)

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Postdoctoral fellow in the field of Experimental Biomechanics and Injury Science.

    Responsibilities:
The candidate will lead a biomechanics research effort focused on the determination of mechanical response and failure mechanisms of hard and soft tissues loaded at high rates. The successful candidate will design and perform experiments using post-mortem human surrogates. Data will be used to validate computational models and to design the next generation of physical human surrogates. Individual will perform both live-fire testing as well as controlled laboratory experiments. Duties include writing scientific manuscripts and whitepapers summarizing results for conferences and peer reviewed journals.
    1. Designing and conducting high rate injury biomechanics experiments in our state of the art test facility (40%)
    2. Analyzing results for the purpose of increasing understanding of injury mechanisms and developing improved mitigation systems (40%)
    3. Publishing and presenting results in peer reviewed journals and at relevant conferences (20%)
Note: This job summary and listing of duties is for the purpose of describing the position and its essential functions at time of hire and may change over time.

    Qualifications:
    Required:
PhD in Biomechanics or related disciple. Demonstrated proficiency in solid and fluid mechanics, expertise in performing experiments using post-mortem human surrogates, design of experiments and statistical data analysis. Hands-on experience designing and implementing custom experimental apparatus. Experience with medical imaging (e.g. micro CT, MRI, and high-speed x-ray). Proficient with analysis and experimental control software (e.g. C++, Matlab, JMP, Labview). Excellent oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills to work as a member of a team.

    Desired:
Proficient with custom instrumentation for experimental control, and CAD for experimental design. Experience working with clinicians, performing laboratory dissection, and histological analysis.

    Special Working Conditions:
This position requires occasional travel for technical meetings with sponsors, conferences, and field testing of materials systems. The travel is not expected to be more than 10% of the time in any given month on a regular basis. Candidate will be expected to lead biological tissue testing efforts, which will require the strict observance of biohazard safety procedures.

    Organization Description:
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), located halfway between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC, is a nonprofit Research and Development laboratory conducting advanced technical programs for the Navy; NASA; the Departments of Defense, Energy, and Transportation; the National Institutes of Health, and other Federal, state, and local agencies. The work includes projects in radar, communications and signal processing, missile guidance and control, submarine systems test and evaluation, space instrumentation and satellite systems, software engineering, and general systems analysis.
