Position: Master of Science Graduate Student
Deadline: Open
Type: Full-Time, 2 years
Discipline: Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering
Location: Calgary, AB, Canada
# of Pos: 1
Application to: University of Calgary Scoliosis Research Group (Dr. Janet Ronsky and/or Jessica Küpper)
Details: The University of Calgary Scoliosis Research Group is seeking to fill a graduate student position for a Master of Science degree at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta. The Scoliosis Research Group is a collaboration between the University of Calgary and the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, and the IWK Centre in Halifax. Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine that is currently monitored with full spinal X-rays, which expose scoliosis patients to radiation that results in an increased risk of cancer. In pursuit of a non-invasive alternative, the Scoliosis Research Group has been investigating the complex relations between torso shape and spinal deformity, and is developing a non-invasive bio-imaging system to detect, monitor and predict progression of scoliosis deformities using surface topography.
The successful applicant will primarily work to further the clinical application of this technology by exploring, quantifying, implementing and evaluating new torso indices. Additionally, the student will manage their MSc program requirements and overall MSc project details including data collection, input into project direction, internship and summer student collaboration, and collaboration with physicians and our Geomatics group on a novel camera system.
Qualifications/Expertise:
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering (Mechanical or Mechanical with BME specialization is preferred)
- A working knowledge of C++ , Matlab, and Windows
- Strongly motivated individual capable of working independently
