Title: Individualised Modelling for Pre-Operative Planning of TKR
    Supervisor: Prof. Marco Viceconti

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position in the field of musculoskeletal biomechanical modelling. The scholarship, which is sponsored by an international health care company, aims to develop a simulation module to be added to an existing software application for pre-operative planning of total knee replacement surgery.

The goal is to develop a procedure for individualising a generic musculoskeletal biomechanical model of the knee region before surgery on each patient imaging data, and then to use the planned surgical intervention to model the biomechanics of the post-operative knee, and with that predict the possible functional outcome.

    Candidate Profile

We are seeking a proactive and talented PhD student for this industry-focused project. Candidates should have a masters degree in engineering with at least a merit or an equivalent qualification and have relevant experience in the area of musculoskeletal dynamics modelling, or at least of multibody dynamics.

While the candidate will work with programmers who will be responsible for the development of the planning software environment, some customisation of existing codes may be necessary, and some automation scripts will have to be developed. Thus, some familiarity with software development will be favourably considered.

Candidates should be creative, have the ability to carry out independent research and interact with an international research team and with industry. We are interested in individuals with excellent communication and leadership skills, who are able to work in an interdisciplinary team and contribute to the visibility of our group in the international scientific community. The ability to interact with other disciplines is essential. The successful candidate will cooperate with members of the group working on related topics.

    Further Information

This studentship covers the cost of tuition fees and provides an annual tax-free maintenance stipend at the standard UK research rate (£13,590 in 2011-12). The scholarship is open to UK, EU and overseas students. Please note, applicants from outside the UK/EU will be required to pay the difference between student fees at the home and overseas rate.

The preferable start date for the project is January 1st, 2013, or earlier if possible.
