Postdoctoral Position – Gait Initiation in Parkinson’s Disease

A two-year postdoctoral fellowship position is available immediately in the Movement Disorders Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. The position is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS). The project is examining the mechanisms by which external cueing facilitates gait initiation in people with Parkinson’s disease. The study will use kinematic, kinetic and multichannel EMG recordings to compare and contrast the effectiveness of different sensory modalities and cue timings on gait initiation. In addition, a series of experiments will be conducted to examine the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation on gait initiation in people with Parkinson’s disease.
The preferred applicant will have a doctoral degree in the area of biomechanics and motor control with specific expertise in the control of posture, balance and gait. The candidate must have extensive experience with the use of surface EMG, motion analysis and force platform systems, and programming in MatLab. Experience collecting data in people with movement impairment, particularly those with Parkinson’s disease, is preferred but not required.
