The Department of Health and Exercise Science at Wake Forest University is seeking motivated graduate students for our 2-year Master of Science program in Health and Exercise Science. The HES department has a research agenda focused on understanding the determinants and prevention of chronic disease and disability across the lifespan. The curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for careers as exercise specialists directing preventive and rehabilitative programs, positions in health and exercise science research programs, and further study in graduate or allied health programs. We offer students (a) rigorous coursework from faculty who are teacher-scholars,(b) an internship in the chronic disease management program run by the HES department, and (c) a MS thesis requirement where students work one-on-one with a faculty advisor.
Members of the HES faculty are engaged in collaborative research with the Departments of Cardiology, Pulmonology, Public Health Sciences, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, and Neurology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available. These positions include a full tuition waiver, a stipend of $10,000 per academic year, a laptop computer, and guaranteed summer funding. A limited number of partial tuition scholarships are also available. Students are engaged in teaching laboratory classes and fluent English is essential.
Applications for Fall 2012 are now being accepted. The deadline for applications is January 15.

The main considerations for admission to the MS program in HES are:
(a) the applicant’s GPA and prior coursework (Anatomy, Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics/Physics, additional science courses);
(b) the applicant’s GRE scores (verbal scores should preferably be in >500, quantitative scores should preferably be >550);
(c) the applicant’s experience and career aspirations.
