PhD Opportunity in joint venture between Dublin City University and the Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin
The Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin (http://www.sportssurgeryclinic.com/) is Ireland's leading private Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital. The Sports Medicine department is at the forefront of clinical and applied research in the field of Athletic groin injury and pain. SSC has recently opened a purpose build 3D motion capture laboratory with Indoor turf floor to assess athletic groin pain and ACL injury. It is envisaged at this stage the laboratory will see over 500 Post ACL reconstruction patients and 800 Athletic groin pain patients each year.
An International Board from Australia, UK and Ireland has formed a Research Steering group and initial studies are underway, resulting in an exciting PhD opportunity in partnership with Dr Kieran Moran (http://www.dcu.ie/info/staff_member.php?id_no=1337), Dublin City University (http://www4.dcu.ie/shhp/index.shtml)
The PhD will be tasked with broadly answering the Research Question – Does Motion Capture assessment enable the acceleration of a targeted rehabilitation programme in the patient with Athletic Groin Pain
Clinical Supervisors will be Dr Eanna Falvey and Andy Franklyn-Miller and Biomechanical supervisors will be Dr Kieran Moran and Dr Brendan Marshall
Applicants can be from a Sports Science/Biomechanics/Physiotherapy/Athletic Therapy and Trainer/Medical or Engineering background. This post would also be suitable for a Clinical Biomechanist
The studentships will be in the form of a tax free scholarship of approx €23,500 pa (to be confirmed) towards fees and living expenses, for three years (equating to living expenses of approximately €18,000 and fees of €5,500).
Applicants should have a minimum of a 2.1 Honours Degree
Desirable Qualities
Prior experience of motion capture (especially VICON Nexus, Polygon) and MATLAB
Prior research experience
Extensive SPSS statistical experience
Interest in the rehabilitation of patients with athletic Groin Pain
Excellent communication and oral presentation skills
Ability to interact and test High profile athletes
