  • Postdoctoral position in biomechanics/mechanical engineering at Northern Arizona Univ

The Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Arizona University (NAU) invites applications for a post-doctoral scholar in mechanical engineering/biomechanics to begin February 2013 The successful candidate will participate in current projects (funded by NSF and NAU) to improve biomimetic control algorithms for a powered foot-ankle prosthesis, and to design and fabricate muscle-like actuators for applications in prosthetics and biological research. The projects may involve the use of human subjects as well as robotic prostheses and orthoses. There are strong mathematical and computational components to the work. Outstanding candidates in mechanical engineering, biomechanics, or a related field will be considered with preference given to candidates with occupational or research biomechanical systems or related research. Experience in developing systems that mimic mechanical and neuromuscular characteristics of human movement is especially desirable. The
postdoctoral scholar will be expected to present posters and papers at national and international conferences, submit grant proposals to federal agencies and manuscripts to peer reviewed journals, based on research activities. Student mentoring and laboratory management will also be required.

The salary for this position is $50,000 per calendar year, depending on experience and qualifications. This position has identified funding for two years.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, biomechanics or a related field conferred by the start date.
Preferred Qualifications: PhD in mechanical engineering, biomechanics, or a related field; expertise in computer simulation, design of experiments and/or data analysis and effective communication skills in both oral and written English.
    Annual Salary: $50,000.
Application Deadline: Open until further notice.
Application Procedure: To apply, send (i) a letter of intent identifying the position of interest, describing research interests and experience, and addressing qualifications, (ii) a current curriculum vitae, and (iii) the names and contact information of three references.
