Faculty Position in Cardiovascular Modeling and Computational Cardiovascular Biology
The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences of the Biomedical Sciences Group, KU Leuven (http://gbiomed.kuleuven.be/) invites applications for a full time academic position in the field of modeling and computational biology of the cardiovascular system. We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual (m/f) with an excellent interdisciplinary research record in the implementation of mathematical models of biological systems, in the context of model-based interpretation of patho-physiological phenomena, which are studied in the experimental and/or clinical setting.
The major activity will consist of scientific research at a high international level, but candidates have to be prepared to take part in teaching activities as well.
Assignment:
Research
The candidate is expected to develop his/her own fundamental, interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research program in cardiovascular modeling and computational cardiovascular biology, strengthening existing research and expanding current expertise. Research output of internationally recognized quality is expected. The candidate is expected to establish collaborations with the researchers of the department of cardiovascular sciences, and especially with the research tracks on small and large animal and human research, with a focus on model-based data integration. This should result in potential applications in the integration and analysis of the interaction between several remodeling processes on the microscopic and macroscopic level. We expect from the candidate to bring or develop complementary expertise to the members of the department, which leads to common funding applications and synergies. The candidate is also expected to develop a vision on possible interactions with other labs of the department and with the relevant departments in the group of Science and Technology and on possibilities of clinical translation of computational analyses.
A successful candidate will contribute and further develop national and international research collaborations of the department.
Teaching
The candidate will casu quo provide high-quality education in the physical aspects of courses thought within the academic programs in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and potentially contribute to the bio-medically oriented courses within the group Science and Technology. He/she is expected to meet the KU Leuven standards regarding academic program level and orientation and to adhere to the KU Leuven’s concept of education. A commitment to quality of education is required (http://www.kuleuven.be/education/high-quality.html) . The candidate will also take part in the education and mentoring of PhD students.
Service
We expect from the candidate that he will participate in working groups, commissions etc. within the department and within the faculty of Medicine. She/he is also expected to actively support potential applications within the Cardiovascular Divisions in the University Hospitals.
Requirements:
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in (Applied) Sciences or any other domain that provides a relevant background for the proposed research program. Candidates are expected to have an excellent research track and are motivated teachers, in order to contribute to the high quality level of teaching and research of the department. The ideal candidate has expertise in modeling of cardiovascular phenomena and a thorough knowledge of cardiovascular physiology and physiological measurement techniques (e.g. imaging, hemodynamic assessment, etc.). Research excellence will be evaluated on the basis of the candidate’s international and peer-reviewed publication track, her/his collaborations in international research projects and networks, and peer evaluations. Research experience abroad is considered a plus. The development of international collaborations is essential.
The candidate should provide a letter of motivation, including a research statement, illustrating how he/she will address the assignments.
Candidates who do not speak Dutch, will be required to learn Dutch so to be able to teach in Dutch within a period of 3 years (level B2 of European reference of requal). Proficiency in English is a requirement.
Depending on the qualifications of the candidate, appointment in one of the academic degrees will be proposed. KU Leuven applies a policy of equal opportunities and diversity.
More information can be obtained from the department Chair Prof. Paul Herijgers (paul.herijgers@med.kuleuven.be) or from Prof. Jan D’hooge (jan.dhooge@med.kuleuven.be).
Applications need to be registered electronically on http://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/job.../medicine.html and are accepted until March 14, 2013. Should you encounter any problems with the electronic registration, please contact Linda Tanghe,
