The Locomotion and Energetics Group at the Medical University of South Carolina is seeking applicants for the doctoral program in Health and Rehabilitation Science. This program focuses on translating research evidence from the laboratory into clinical practice in order to improve functional outcomes. The Locomotion and Energetics Group investigates the mechanics, control, and energetics of human movement, and the application of these principles in clinical populations. Ongoing projects include developing a passive exoskeleton for gait assistance, and linking post-stroke changes in neural control accuracy to deficits in gait stability and economy.
Applicants should have a research interest in rehabilitation following a neurological injury, and would preferably have some research experience in laboratory measures typically used to quantify human movement performance (e.g. EMG, gait kinematics and kinetics, metabolic cost, etc.). Candidates could have an academic background in a wide range of fields, including kinesiology, exercise science, physical therapy, or biomedical engineering. A masters or clinical degree would be beneficial, but candidates with bachelor degrees will be fully considered. Funding is available to support tuition, health insurance, and a stipend.
The Medical University of South Carolina is an academic health center located in Charleston, South Carolina. The university campus is in historic downtown Charleston, and is only minutes from several beaches. Charleston is consistently ranked as one of the friendliest and most livable cities in the country, and was selected as the “Top U.S. City” by Conde Nast Traveler magazine in both 2011 and 2012.
