Postdoctoral Position at The University of Michigan: Model Based Assessment of Knee Joint Tissue Level Responses to Dynamic Loading

Description: An opportunity exists to work as part of an extensive collaborative team involving The University of Michigan School of Kinesiology, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery aimed at accurate constitutive modeling of the knee ligament, tendon and cartilage responses under dynamic loading conditions. We are seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified postdoctoral researcher to join our team and help lead a project applying a detailed understanding of knee joint anatomy, mechanics and tissue material behaviors to high-impact events that cause joint and tissue injury. In addition, these techniques will be applied to examine native and reconstructed ACL tissue/graft behaviors under similar load conditions. This project forms part of a large-scale investigation funded through the University of Michigan MCubed program. Candidates should be able to work effectively across departments and translate findings rapidly to the applied setting. They should also have considerable experience in undertaking complex numerical and analytical model-based analyses.

    Required qualifications:
    - Extensive finite element analysis experience (ABAQUS preferred)
    - Continuum mechanics
    - Tissue biomechanics
    - Image analysis
    - Detailed understanding of joint anatomies and kinematics
    - Strong publication track record
    - Strong written and oral English communication skills

    Term:
    - Initially a 1-year appointment, likely start date June 1 (or earlier), 2013.
    - Possible extension of 1 additional year dependent on performance and available funding

    Application materials:
    - Cover letter (2-page maximum)
    - CV
    - Letters of reference preferred, or contact information of references
    - Sample publication with clearly stated individual contributions
    - Graduate transcripts
