The candidate would be part of a collaborative team in the Office of Science and Engineering Labs (OSEL), at the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) at the Food and Drug Administration. The team’s primary objective is to develop and validate a standard test method, on a single station load-controlled spine simulator, to evaluate wear and deformation of artificial total disc replacement devices (TDRs) under non-ideal loading conditions (impingement). A secondary purpose is to develop a scientific understanding and test method(s) related to degradation and failure mechanisms of TDRs based on implant design, manufacturing variability, and material properties. All the above will be used to develop standards and guidance for use by industry as well as publish validation results. The position is for one year.
Qualifications: We are seeking an interdisciplinary scientist with a Ph.D. and background in the areas of mechanical testing, wear and/or fatigue testing, spine or joint simulator use, and/or polymer or materials science. The candidate should possess good interpersonal skills and be self-motivating, show initiative, and be able to work independently as well as direct undergraduate students. Experience in the following is preferred (listed in order of priority):
1. MTS and/or Instron load frames.
2. Spine or total joint simulators.
3. ASTM and/or ISO standards.
4. Mechanical testing of medical devices.
5. Polymer or materials science.
How to Apply: Qualified applicants may send their cover letter, resume or CV, and contact information of three professional references to OSELRecruitment@fda.hhs.gov. Note this is not a GS position. Please also send these items to the division and project contacts listed below.
