Research Engineer – Rehabilitation Robotics – Northwestern University
The newly formed Human Agility Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated and self-sufficient "RESEARCH ENGINEER 1"to join our team. We are developing multiple robotic devices to assist in the recovery of movement following neurological injury. You will take a lead role in the development (design and control) of these rehabilitation robotic tools. You will also assist in conducting and analyzing experiments assessing human performance during and following robotic-assisted interventions. This is an opportunity to directly apply your engineering skills to address real clinical problems.
The Human Agility Laboratory is part of the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences within the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. We are located on the Chicago campus of Northwestern University, between Lake Michigan and North Michigan Avenue along “Chicago's Magnificent Mile.” Chicago has a vibrant rehabilitation robotics community that you will have the opportunity to interact with and learn from. Our laboratory has direct ties with the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the #1 rated rehabilitation hospital in the US, and the Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Hospital.
Required Qualifications
* M.S. in biomedical, mechanical, or electrical engineering or related field, or B.S. with 2 years of experience.
* Research experience related to robotics and controls.
* Programming experience LabVIEW and Matlab.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with haptics, rehabilitation engineering, mechatronics, human-machine interactions.
* Experience with real-time control software in particular LabVIEW Real-Time.
* Experience using biomechanical assessment tools (motion capture systems, force plates, EMG) to quantify human movement.
* Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients, research subjects, team members and project collaborators.
* Analytical skills to select and interpret tests appropriate for the research.
* Communication skills necessary to write detailed explanatory reports and articles and to verbally communicate results of research at meetings and conferences.
