    The Laboratory "Motricité, Interactions, Performance" (MIP, EA 4334 - University of Nantes, France) offers a full-time PhD position in Neurophysiology and Biomechanics (36 months) starting on September or October 1st 2013. The MIP laboratory is located on the campus of the Faculty of Sport Sciences (UFR STAPS), Nantes (France).

    The research project is devoted to investigate the plasticity of muscle coordination and its optimization during cyclic poly-articular movements (e.g., pedaling, rowing). The novelty of the experiments is based on the study of muscle coordination combining different approaches in neurophysiology and biomechanics: electromyography, inverse dynamic, neurostimulation and ultrasonography. The first aim of this project is to clarify the contraction modality and contraction velocity of main lower limb muscles during both cycling and rowing tasks at different intensities and movement frequency. The second aim is to test some hypotheses regarding the existence of inter-muscular compensations during fatigue and to analyze the influence of different training procedures on coordination and performance. More precisely, it remains unclear whether muscle coordination could be i) negatively affected by acute fatigue of one specific muscle/muscle group (mono-articular vs. bi-articular) or ii) positively affected by improving the intrinsic muscle properties and/or technical skills.

    Successful candidates should have completed a Master’s degree in human movement science, biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, or a related discipline. An experience with the assessment of human performance, muscle function or coordination (kinematic or neuromuscular approach) is highly desirable. Experience with electrical stimulation and electromyography techniques as well computer programming skills (Matlab or similar software) is appreciated but not compulsory. An ability to speak French would be advantageous but is not mandatory.
