  • Post-doctoral position at Hospital for Special Surgery

The Tissue Engineering Regeneration and Repair Program at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), New York, is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to explore the effects of mechanical load on the response of cell-seeded scaffolds for soft tissue repair. The project will involve scaffold fabrication, tissue harvesting, cell culture, mechanical testing, and the use of a variety of quantitative analysis techniques (e.g., qRT-PCR, biochemical assays, histological processing and scoring). A strong background in cell signaling is an advantage. You will be required to work closely with residents and fellows, research engineers and other post-doctoral students in our applied research group. A desire to learn new techniques and an ability to work independently are key requisites. Interested candidates should have recently obtained a Ph.D. in bioengineering, biology, tissue engineering or mechanical engineering and must express a willingness to learn outside of their original training.

The laboratory's overarching focus is on developing novel solutions for the treatment of cartilage and meniscal defects to delay the progression of osteoarthritis. To achieve this goal, we work closely with the Sports Medicine Service, the Department of Biomechanics, Department of Radiology and a team of biologists at HSS. Applicants will thus be required to work with a multi-disciplinary research team. Hospital for Special Surgery is a world-leading orthopedic and rheumatology hospital and offers a vibrant research atmosphere with extensive collaborations. In addition, further opportunities for scientific interaction exist through affiliations with New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University.

Candidates should have strong written and verbal communication skills. Under-represented minorities are encouraged to apply. The deadline for the receipt of your application for this position is June 28th, 2013. Please expect to obtain an email from me confirming receipt of your application by July 10th, 2013.

Curriculum Vitae and the names, telephone numbers and email addresses of three references should be emailed to: Suzanne A. Maher Ph.D. mahers@hss.edu
