  • PhD Position - Musculoskeletal Modelling and Simulation of Upper‐limb Biomechanics

Supervisors: Prof. Margit Gföhler, Vienna University of Technology, Austria
Prof. Marcus Pandy, University of Melbourne, Australia

A research scholarship is available immediately for an appropriately qualified individual to
pursue a PhD degree at Vienna University of Technology working on an exciting new project
funded by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF. The goal of the research is to design and
build a novel wheelchair propulsion system using state‐of‐the‐art methods in computational
musculoskeletal modeling and optimization theory applied to biomechancis of the human
upper‐limb. Gait analysis experiments will also be performed to validate the musculoskeletal
modeling procedures and to test the performance of the new wheelchair propulsion system

Candidates for this position must hold a master's degree in mechanical engineering,
biomedical engineering or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have a strong
background in rigid‐body mechanics and demonstrable skills in computer programming. A
working knowledge of musculoskeletal biomechanics is also desirable.

The research project is a collaboration between Vienna University of Technology, University
of Melbourne, Australia, and the AUVA Rehabilitation Center “Weisser Hof“, Austria.
The proposed commencement date is September 1, 2013, and funding is available for 3

Interested candidates should send their application in English including a complete CV and
an accompanying letter detailing the candidate's motivations, his or her previous experience,
and relevant skills, preferably by email to:
