The Clinical Biomechanist for the National Institute of Athletic Health Performance will be responsible to perform sport-related biomechanical assessments in support of client/outpatient services, and most notably, to serve as the operator/technician of the NIAHP’s gait analysis and instrumented treadmill (GAIT) system. The GAIT system consists of an h/p/cosmos® treadmill with an embedded Zebris® force and pressure distribution platform, a dual camera system, and the latest state-of-the-art analytical software. The GAIT system is used for evaluations of injured runners by Sanford Orthopedic and Sports Medicine (SOSM) sports rehabilitation therapists, and is also the featured assessment tool of SOSM’s Running Performance Services, which targets healthy athletes who want to optimize their performance. Thus, in addition to working with NIAHP staff, the Clinical Biomechanist/Research Associate III will work closely with a team of sports rehabilitation therapists, as well as staff at the Sanford POWER Center, where the GAIT system resides. This individual will be expected to develop expertise and competence in operating the GAIT system, creating assessment reports, and conducting performance-based gait evaluations, which will include appropriate feedback and training recommendations. The successful candidate will play an integral role in helping to develop and advance this signature SOSM athlete service.
The second major responsibility of the Clinical Biomechanist/Research Associate III will be to assist with existing and future research studies at the NIAHP. Current areas of research include: heat stress and injury risk, diagnoses and evaluation of traumatic brain injury, glycemic challenges among Type I diabetics during exercise in the heat, and assessments of musculoskeletal injury risk. Basic to moderately-complex laboratory techniques/skills will need to be utilized in the areas of applied exercise physiology and biomechanics. All research will be performed as part of a research team, and specific training required for this position will be provided. There is a particular opportunity to develop skills and expertise in the biomechanical aspects of the Institute’s research, which includes, but is not limited to, musculoskeletal injury risk assessments and measures of postural stability.
