    Research Engineer at the Department of Veterans Affairs

    The Rehabilitation Research & Development (RR&D) Center of Excellence for Limb Loss Prevention and Prosthetic Engineering at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA has an opening for a research engineer. This position is available immediately and will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found. The successful candidate will be involved primarily in three projects, but will have room to expand his or her involvement in other research areas related to the Center’s overall mission. The main responsibilities are: 1) to supervise the day-to-day activities of a research project quantifying pre- and post-surgical differences between subjects with severe flat feet and subjects with severe high arched feet, 2) to maintain and continue to develop the hardware and software of our custom biplane fluoroscope for use in several lower limb projects, and 3) develop in-house software for CT-based studies on bone morphology and bone-to-bone positioning.

    Preferred technical competencies include the following: 1) experience with motion analysis data acquisition and analysis, 2) calibration and routine maintenance of instrumentation (force plates, pressure plates, load cells, etc.), and 3) familiarity with Matlab and Blender. Furthermore, strong oral and written communication skills are necessary. Experience with X-ray generation equipment would be a strong plus.

    This position requires a Masters (preferred) or Bachelors degree (with several years experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or other biomechanics related field, as well as knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of biomechanics.
