The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Queen’s University invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC), commencing spring/summer 2014. The rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the appointment is contingent upon the applicant competing successfully, externally, for a Tier 2 CRC.
The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to foster world-class research excellence in Canadian universities (see http://www.chairs.gc.ca). CRC recipients are eligible for significant infrastructure support through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The Tier 2 CRC program seeks to recognize emerging researchers with the potential to achieve international status in five to ten years.
The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (http://me.queensu.ca) currently has an enrolment of approximately 480 undergraduate students and over 100 graduate students in the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. Research in the Department is supported by four (4) research chairs: Tier 2 CRC in Mechanics of Materials, Tier 1 CRC in Computational Turbulence, NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Nuclear Materials and Queen’s Research Chair in Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The expectation is that the chair will be in the area of biomechanics or biomaterials with a focus on bone and joint health technologies. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, or a related area, along with a record of interdisciplinary research and collaboration in biomechanical, biomaterials and/or biomedical engineering.
The successful candidate is expected to initiate a leading-edge research program that includes direct interaction with researchers at the Human Mobility Research Centre (see below), apply for and obtain external funding to support research and graduate students, supervise graduate students and teach undergraduate courses in the core curriculum of Mechanical and Materials Engineering as well as graduate courses in their specific area of research interest. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development of curriculum and undertake administrative contributions through service to the University, Faculty, Department and profession. Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, or eligibility to acquire registration in Canada, is an essential qualification.
Queen’s University and Kingston General Hospital (KGH) have identified human mobility as a major health and social issue. Nearly one-third of the population will be significantly affected by musculoskeletal disease during their lifetime. However, current treatments are often invasive, costly and are in ever-increasing demand with increased life expectancy. The Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC) serves as a point of collaboration between researchers in medicine, engineering, health sciences and information technology that fosters innovation through collaborative musculoskeletal projects (see http://www.hmrc.ca). Through HMRC, Queen’s and its associated hospitals have committed to infrastructure and research in this area.
