The consortium of 4 UK Universities (Edinburgh, Liverpool, Durham and Heriot-Watt) was recently awarded a major research grant by the EPSRC to undertake a multidisciplinary project entitled “A novel diagnostic tool: from structural health monitoring to tissue quality prediction”. The project aims to evaluate the quality of bone tissue using: advanced and novel high resolution (micro-CT) imaging technologies; analysis microarchitecture; nonlinear computational modelling and homogenisation; and tissue biomechanical characterisation. The project will bring together scientists and clinicians in a multi-disciplinary effort to develop and use leading-edge basic science and translational expertise and technologies to design a tool for early diagnosis of tissue disease.
The consortium aims to recruit four postdoctoral research fellows (PDRFs) – one at each of the four universities. This advertisement is for the position based at the School of Engineering, the University of Edinburgh.
The PDRF based at the University of Edinburgh will be responsible for developing novel methods of analysing bone microarchitecture and linear/nonlinear finite element modelling of its mechanical behaviour. The candidate should have a PhD in a relevant discipline (Engineering, Physics) and a recent record of research in computational solid mechanics and nonlinear finite element modelling. Ideally the candidate will also have a research background in some of the following areas: orthopaedic biomechanics; bone microarchitecture analysis; homogenisation approaches; and modelling anisotropic materials.
The PDRF will be expected to communicate regularly within the consortium, attend and present research findings at internal project meetings and international conferences. He/she will also contribute to the internal and external visibility of the research groups and publish scientific results arising from this project.
Salary Grade UE07 £30,424 - £36,298 per annum
This is a fixed term post for 2.5 years.
