The International Paralympic Committee Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
The Faculty of Human Movement Sciences at VU Amsterdam invites applications for The International Paralympic Committee Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (see http://www.vu.nl/en/employment/vacancies/2013/061.asp). This position has been established as a result of a partnership between the IPC and VU Amsterdam to develop evidence-based classification systems for athletes with visual impairment. The visual classification system endorsed by the IPC should encourage visually impaired persons to participate in sport by ensuring they compete in comparable classes that minimise the impact of the visual impairment on the outcome of the competition.
The position is a research role working exclusively on projects for IPC sport classification. The successful applicant will be responsible for the development of methods of evidence-based classification that ensure fair and equitable competition in Paralympic Sport, specifically in this case, for the development of assessment tools and sport-specific classification in IPC Swimming. Across different phases of the project the successful applicant will be required to (1) use innovative measurement techniques (e.g., performance analysis and biomechanics) to establish the visual information relied on by skilled swimmers; (2) examine the magnitude of visual impairment likely to impact a swimmers ability to pick-up this task-relevant information (hence impairing swimming performance); and (3) develop and validate a suitable visual and/or psychometric testing paradigm to ensure fair and equitable competition between visually impaired swimmers. The IPC aims to have the new classification procedure in place for the 2020 Paralympic games.
IPC Vision Classification Research at VU Amsterdam is managed by Dr. David Mann and is performed within the Perceptual Motor Control Research Group headed by Prof. Geert Savelsbergh. The successful applicant will be based in the beautiful cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam; however, the position requires intermittent domestic and international travel to attend conferences and to perform data collection at swimming meets and competitions.
Requirements
Candidates are required to have a PhD in human movement science, optometry, psychology, or in a suitably related area (completed or with a fixed date for the defence/submission). Candidates should be fluent in English (Dutch is not compulsory) and possess excellent communication skills. Candidates should have a competitive research track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences (commensurate with that of a recent PhD graduate).
The following skills are highly desirable for the role (though not compulsory): experience working with elite athletes and/or coaches; computer programming skills (e.g., Matlab); experience in vision and/or psychometric testing; experience of performance analysis in sport.
Further particulars
The IPC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is a 3-year position with an initial appointment for 1 year. The starting date is flexible, though the Faculty is looking to commence the project as soon as possible.
Salary
We offer a competitive postdoctoral salary package in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel in the Netherlands (CAO salary scale 10 commencing at € 3,037 gross per month based on fulltime employment). International applicants may qualify for the skilled immigrant tax ruling that ensures 30% of the salary is non-taxable (see www.iamsterdam.com for further details).
