  • Research Scientist position, Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety

Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety (www.libertymutual.com/research) is looking for a Principal Research Scientist to develop, direct, and implement studies to advance our understanding of factors contributing to falls-related injuries with a view towards informing interventions that can effectively reduce their incidence or mitigate their consequences. Of particular interest are falls in the working environment or within the context of the design, construction, management and use of built environments. This is a fully-salaried, permanent position with excellent compensation and benefits. The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety (LMRIS) Center for Physical Ergonomics has more than half a century tradition of excellence in the pursuit of knowledge in the assessment and prevention of physiological, biomechanical, tribological and other engineering factors that contribute to workplace injuries. The Center conducts laboratory and field studies and its staff is well published and respected in their respective fields.

    Responsibilities:
    • Conceives, plans and conducts studies to investigate the causes and mechanisms of falls-related injuries using leading-edge theories, applications, methodologies and principles.
    • Prepares research proposals and identifies new strategies and emerging opportunities in safety research to benefit LMRIS.
    • Submits high quality research results to refereed journals for publication, in accordance with Principal Research Scientist performance expectations
    • Provides technical leadership to a program area and technical oversight to other program researchers; mentors other researchers and post-doctorate fellows
    • Prepares proposals for Directors, Technical Review Committee, and Institutional Review Board; may work with other members of Commercial Professional Services to interpret and implement research findings
    • Contributes to a climate conducive to generating ideas through staff presentations and seminars.
    Qualifications:
    • Doctoral-level training with 5-8 years of research experience in a relevant field – such as biomechanics, ergonomics, physiology, kinesiology, engineering, or other related discipline.
    • Experience in balance control research, human gait, or biomechanics of falls is an asset.
    • Demonstrated abilities to develop research ideas (through independent and collaborative scholarly activity), implement innovative methods, work in interdisciplinary teams, solve problems, and translate results to scientific publications are important.
